And a Velvet Pall put over it, and so carryed on 8 men 's Shoulders to Church, and the Ceremony being performed was

April 4th. [this is in the margin opposite this entry sw]

put in the Vault, gave the priest 5s. to the S[e sw]xton 1s. and returned to Bodorgan where a great company came& dined– and I staid there this night. I was in the Vault, which has been built about 8 year's ago, it is about 4 yards — square, Arched at top with brick, which is supported in the middle by a square pillar of brick, and as high as– most men's heads, there is a bench quite round it(except at the stairs that comes down to it ) cut out of a Rock, and broad enough for any Coffin, there was in it then 3 Coffins that of Mr. Wm. Meyrick of Cefn Coch, those of Mr. Philip and Eyton Meyrick 2 sons of Mr. Edmund Meyrick of Trefri, and not the least ill smell in it. Mr. John Evans of Bwllen Mr. Meyrick's Agent told us a very Extraordinary thing that he and others dis– -covered on ye opening of the Vault; Mr. John Evans was one of the first that went down with Mr. Meyrick of Trefri. they found something stopping in ye way, & being surprized they sent for Candles, and found Mr. Philip Meyrick's Coffin(which had been laid on ye bench next the East with its feet to the North wall very close, & his Brother Eyton's Coffin lyeing on the North bench betwixt Mr. Wm. Meyrick's Coffin & the feet of Mr. Philip's Coffin) brought down from the bench with its head close to ^ye^ pillar ^on the ground,^ [this insertion is in the margin sw] and about an inch of the feet of it on the East bench opposite to ye pillar: this Surprizeing sight caused many conjectures Mr. Meyrick of Trefri the young man's father seemed to think it was caused by water filling the Vault which brought it out of its place, & left it in that position, others answered that if water had been the Cause it wou[ld sw] [the 'ld' is obliterated by a blot sw] have had the same effect on ^the^ other Coffins, some others thought it was caused by the body's reviving, & so by strugling had brought it from its place; here is room [there is a line over the second 'o' sw] for Philosophick enquiry: The Young man was buryed about 2 year's ago, dyed of a Consumption, was about 21 years of Age.
