May 27th. called at Bwlch Gwyn where I paid 6d. for Ale [and sw] was in Town by 5. Mr. John Owen & a great Number of Vot[ers se] came to Town at 6, Mr. Baily came to Town privately with a few in Company, among whom was Mr. Herbert of Oakly Park. Sent here by the Ministry to disolve the Union betwixt Mr. John Owen & Mr. Meyrick, wherein he failed after many fruitless — Conferences to obtain the Same.
28th.  The Wind N. very calm, hot and Sultry, all day; Went to the Shire Hall about ii. And the high Sheriff not being there, his Son Councellor Wms. pretended he had a Verball authority from him to represent him to take the poll, which Mr. John Owen and his party opposed for a long time as a person attached to Mr. Baily ’s Interest, yet at last they gave way to it, and the Poll begun about i in the Evening, The Sheriff, Mr. Baily, and his party were very fierce and sanguine all this day in taking the poll, and no more than 40 of a Side polled this day . made a fine Shower of rain this night which lasted 2hours.
29th.  The Wind S. calm and very hot and sultry all day; they went to the hall about 10. when the Poll was carryed on with as much fierceness and eagerness at the day before, till about 5 in ye evening Mr Baily's Spirits & that of his party was visibly Sunk , and instead of polling 20 at a time as before, the last round was but 10 of a side; 70 of a side was polled this day,Mr. Herbert sat every day in Court by the Sheriff, & tho he did not in – -termeddle in the matter by speaking publickly, yet he was observed to be often whispering Mr. Baily & the Sheriff.
30th.  The Wind S. calm, and very hot & Sultry; The Sheriff did not come to Court till ii a clock, and Mr. Baily & his party did not appear there at all, Mr. J. Owen proceeding in the Poll, polled 70 without intermission, and that being Majority enough, he stopped there. whereupon ye Sheriff declared Mr. J. Owen duly Elected. Mr. B. had 3i. unpolled. & Mr. John Owen had 32. Set out from Town about 5 and came to LLysdulas this night .
